About WPLAR

What is RPL?

WPLAR Manitoba has overseen the development of Recognizing Prior Learning  (RPL) in the workplace. RPL identifies and recognizes the skills and knowledge that an individual has achieved. RPL promotes strategies and tools to recognize formal and informal learning.

RPL supports strong workforce development and a pathway to employment and training practice. The strength of RPL is the authentic and transparent assessment, and documentation of skills and knowledge learned in life and work.

Since our start in 2001, RPL has evolved into an effective practice to assist individuals, employers, labour and market partners to meet diverse workforce development needs. Prior learning, whether formal or informal, can be gained in a variety of areas including the workplace, classroom or community.

RPL is supported through provincial funds to deliver the following programming:

  • Valid 8 e-portfolio (PDF) – provides managers and assessors with information that demonstrates staff or learners’ competencies.
  • Igniting the Power Within – a unique, five-level certification series of workshops specifically designed for community advisors, counselors, and educators from Indigenous communities. For more information please email [email protected]

RPL can include:

  • Work experience – paid and unpaid
  • Volunteer work
  • School credits
  • Military experience
  • Travel
  • Hobbies
  • Independent study
  • Family and life experiences

RPL can help:

  • Identify goals, personal strengths, interests, skills, knowledge, and abilities
  • Show what you know and how to make a plan
  • Capture and recognize verified skills and knowledge, regardless of where they were acquired and connect them to where you want to go in employment or training
  • Document evidence of skills and learning to assist individuals in finding and keeping employment and transitioning through their workplaces and to other jobs
  • RPL is good workforce development that promotes strategies and tools which recognize formal and informal learning
